Her sculptures are based on the mythical animals that play a role in the Mabinogion, the most important mediaeval literature of Wales, where she grew up on a farm.Yet these animals are not simply an illustration of the stories.Their sober colours and expressive stances represent a collective image, stored in the memory of anyone who has ever read fairytales, legends and myths. They are creatures which appeal to the imagination and evoke associations with dark forests. She shapes her pieces by hand, giving each creature its own unique character.
Various materials melt to form the whole, in his assembled works. He joins together iron and ceramics to complete his figures with imaginary tools. Favela, a stooping ceramic man hauling a wooden house, has an expressiveness guaranteed to move any viewer. An aged affect is achieved through the weathered wood, the rusty colour of the iron and the subdued, matte colours of the ceramics. He applies many layers of paint, the top ones being the softest in colour. The singular form of the figures, nearly always male, gives his work universal significance.
From Nov. 1 to Nov. 4 2012 Terra Delft Gallery will be participating for the first time at theShanghai Art Fair in China. In the stand the gallery shows a overview of the works as created in Sanbao near Jingdezhen this summer by five artists of the gallery. At the ceramic fair of JingdezhenIn the project Terra in China - China in Terra will be part of the presentation in the stand of the city of Delft . A selection of the ceramics as realised during the 6 weeks artis in residence this summer in Sanbao, in cooperation with Chinese artists, will be shown. The work contains abstract forms with a blue-white decoration which is painted by the artists as couples; a Chinese artist together with a Dutch artist.
Characteristic of her representations are the abstract, autonomous objects of mathematical proportions. They seem to float, despite their robustness. Their interface is the point at which the shape is in balance. The dimensions and ratios reflect the harmonious balance of natural growth processes. Harmony is also recognizable in the use of colours, often blue and green tints, and in the game played by light and shadow on the skin.
A strong sense of ratio and colour, and great expertise (see for example the perfectly fitting lids) can be recognised in his vases, dishes and lidded boxes. He shapes them both on the potter's wheel and from sheets of clay. The surface of the objects is the canvas for his true love: painting. He applies thin glazes, personally developed and based on the Japanese ceramic tradition, using enormous brushes, layer after layer. The result is a deep and warm colour with many nuances, brought to life by the repetition of the geometric patterns.
Summer exhibition 2012 ‘Foster Family’
During the summer Terra Delft Gallery you can see the exhibition of Renate Nederpel, a young artist.
Her first exhibition at Terra sustains from a collection old tableware she has given a second live. Every element is dressed in a porcelain vest. These nice warm jackets give the classics a nursed retirement.
The summer at Terra lasts from June 30 to August 11 2012 and the gallery will only be limited open: Friday from 11 to 18 and Saturday from 11 tot 17
Terra in China - China in Terra is a cultural exchange between two cities strongly associated with ceramics.
During a six-week stay at the ceramic studios of Jiansheng Li in Sanbao, near Jingdezhen, a group of outstanding Dutch artists / ceramists will explore the possibilities of local material and techniques within the framework of the Chinese culture. The artists invited to participate were selected on the grounds of their artistic qualities, cultural enterprise and the diversity of their work.
Swinging Ceramics
Iván Jelínek & Ross Emerson
From 26 May to 23 June 2012 you will find in Terra Delft Gallery a merry tuning exhibition of two foreign ceramic artists. Their items seem to runaway from a fairy-tale picture book like Alice in Wonderlandor from a cartoon where the cups and the glass are dancing on table.
