Louise Hindsgavl (DK)
statement
Louise Hindsgavl graduated from Designskolen Kolding (DK) in 1999 specialising in one-off pieces. Hindsgavl mainly works in porcelain. Her works have a distinctly narrative expression, both when she works with one-off pieces and with more utilitarian items. She wants us to experience the multiplicity of ceramics through her work, while at the same time stimulating our imaginations.
Louise Hindsgavl feels that we often let the pre-determined images of others dictate our taste. She wants to change that tradition and to this end, her works often have surrealist undertones, where she produces a form of alternative reality for the viewer to enter.
Hindsgavl uses several ceramic techniques in her work – such as throwing, modelling and moulding. Her works are represented at several Danish museums including the Danish Museum of Decorative Art, the Museum of International Ceramic Art at Grimmerhus and the Trapholt Museum of Modern Art, Applied Art, Design and Furniture Design in Kolding.
In 2004, she received a grant from the Danish Arts Foundation. That year she also won the Danish ‘Biennial Award’ at the Craft and Design Biennial. In 2005 her humorous and original work was featured in two separate exhibitions at Galleri Nørby in Copenhagen and at Puls Contemporary Ceramics in Brussels, Belgium.
