The ceramic work of Judith de Vries is made out of French porcelain clay from Limoges, which she mixes with different colour pigments. The bottom parts of her vessels and bowls are often thrown on the wheel, while the top part is build up by slabs with complex decorative patterns. These patterns are made piece by piece with multiple strips of coloured clays. The colours go right through the piece or, when using a backing slab, the white from the background shows as very thin lines between the strokes of pattern in front. Likewise, colours from the front show like the thin veins of floral petal on the reverse of slab, that is, on the inside of the pot. This patterning always leads the eye from base to crown, so that you think you are witnessing one of those wonderful delayed shots of an opening flower from a nature program on television. After several stages of scraping, refining and sand dusting, her pieces are fired in an electric kiln, first at 1000 C and after glazing the inside, they are fired a second time at 1200 C. Once her vessels emerge from the kiln, she burnishes the outside with wet and dry paper to obtain a softly smooth surface. Working in her technique in porcelain requires great patience and endurance. This exhibition is a collaboration between Terra Delft Gallery, Sanbao Int. Ceramic Art Museum Institute in Jingdezhen and Tree Art Museum in Beijing. Exhibiting artists are: Anne-Soline Barbaux (F) Wim Borst (NL) Ivan Jelínek (CZ) Guy van Leemput (B) Martin McWilliam (D) Saskia Pfaeltzer (NL) Barbara Röling (NL) Duncan Ross (GB) Susanne Silvertant (NL) Judith de Vries (NL) As European contemporary ceramics features a wide variety of products, the work in this sector of the visual arts is growing more and more interesting. And that is now also noted in Beijing – China. On 14 September, a delegation from Europe will go to Sanbao-Jingdezhen for a two weeks an artist-in-residence program to follow. Then they travel to Beijing to attend the opening of the exhibition. The group guided by Simone Haak (Terra Delft Gallery) and Jackson Li (Int Sanbao Ceramic Art Museum Institute) consists of Anne-Soline Barbaux (F), Wim Borst (NL), Guy van Leemput (B), Saskia Pfaeltzer (NL), Barbara Röling (NL) and Judith de Vries (NL). The Tree Art Museum is located in Song Zhuang, Beijing. Construction of the 3200 m2 building started in November 2010 and it opened its doors in September 2012. As an arts colony, Song Zhuang is widely-known for range of progressive art venues, which can be visited only by appointment. This new addition to the “artists’ village” is owned by the Chinese Contemporary Art Development Foundation and designed by Daipu, a young architect in China who leads a comparatively small design team.

There are artist exchanges between these two organizations every year: Chinese artists come to Delft, and European artists spend time in Jingdezhen for artist-in-residence periods. Each year, spring and autumn, Simone Haak of Terra Delft Gallery has served as the curator of the exhibition which takes place in Jackson Li’s Sanbao Museum. This autumn exhibition, with work from 17 artists, shows a great variety in subject and technique from East and West, and is therefore a unique representation of contemporary ceramics. The exhibition this autumn is co-curated by Johanpeter (JP) Hol, whose work is especially featured in the exhibition. Since 2016 JP has been in Jingdezhen numerous times for work periods varying from a few weeks to months. As an artist, his point of departure is from an idea rather than from the material. His work is based on the human paradox: the individual in the group and the sense of forlornness that can be felt even as part of a group, the loneliness of the human condition. Some overlapping themes include the invisible things, shadows, what remains unsaid between members of a group, dystopia, and disneyfication. The inspiring creative climate of the porcelain city of Jingdezhen has made ceramics an important part of his materials repertoire; he also adds plastic, fabric, paper, paint, and metal to that. The Sanbao International Ceramic Art Institute is now 20 years old. In the coming two years this anniversary will be celebrated with diverse projects, with a concluding finale in 2020. Since 2012, more than twenty European artists have spent time in Sanbao, Jingdezhen in order to work and exchange experiences. This has been an inspiring period for every one of them
